Lovely to meet you, my name is Jay Wood.
I'm a relational art psychotherapist who utilises evidence-based, trauma informed therapy techniques to work alongside you.
As a white, middle-aged transgender man living and working on unceded Gadigal land, I am an artist, educator, and a graduate (with ahem Distinction) of the Master of Art Therapy program at Western Sydney University. I have over 20 years of experience working with children, young people, adults, and families across various education settings—from preschool to high school—and mental health environments, alongside magnificent organisations like KidsXpress, Benevolent Society, MTC, Fambo, Rainbow Families, and Innerwest Council.
I wholeheartedly believe in building safe therapeutic relationships within which my clients feel free to explore their inner world. As a relational art psychotherapist, I will be right beside you to witness your discoveries and support you as you take steps towards self-knowledge and healing. I'm dedicated to listening deeply to your stories through the many languages that humans can use—be it spoken, play, movement, music, or art.
I work with children, teenagers, adults, elders, neurotypical, neurodiverse, cisgender, transgender, and gender expansive individuals, straight, LGBTQIA+ queer and questioning, disabled, able-bodied, well, chronically or terminally ill humans of all ages. I am registered with the Australian, New Zealand and Asian Creative Arts Therapies Association (ANZACATA) and hold a current WWCC, along with a NSW Police check.
As trust builds, we can explore themes of identity, trauma, loss, difference, grief, depression, anxiety, joy, sadness, exclusion, indecision, love, separation, boredom—the full spectrum of the human experience.
Outside of my work, I have a wonderfully full life making art and being a dad to four gloriously expansive kids and an exuberant Jack Russell Pterodactyl named Dave.

We humans are diverse, right? Our varied needs lead us to create options for your therapy space. As a relational art psychotherapist, I offer art therapy sessions that can be conducted from wherever you feel most comfortable via Zoom. All you need is a quiet space and a safe place to store your artwork. If your access to resources is limited, we can suggest numerous art materials to work with prior to your session.
You might also choose to visit me at Diverse Art Therapy’s studio space in Sydney, located at Shop 3/654 King St, Newtown NSW 2042. Caregivers can enjoy nearby cafes or explore the many eateries on King Street while they wait.
